The Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency (IRMA) invites interest in the position of Supervisor of Liability Claims. IRMA is a highly respected intergovernmental agency consisting of 71 Northeastern Illinois public entities that provides high-quality risk management services to its members, including customized public entity coverage that is one of the most comprehensive programs available; long-term stability in pricing and membership; flexible deductibles and an exceptional in-house claims department.
In addition to supervising claims operations, the Supervisor serves as a key strategic partner to executive leadership by identifying emerging risks, analyzing claims and litigation trends, assessing financial and operational impacts, and recommending initiatives to reduce losses and improve member outcomes. The position translates claims experience into actionable insights that support organizational priorities, risk management strategies, and informed decision-making.
This position also ensures timely reporting to reinsurers and excess insurance, reviews coverage documents and determines coverage issues, oversees subrogation recovery efforts, provides strategic oversight of litigation and defense counsel, and provides training and consultation to members. The Supervisor also serves as staff liaison to assigned Steering Committees, participates in Committee and Board meetings, and collaborates with leadership and other departments to translate claims experience into strategies that reduce risk and improve member outcomes.
Candidates must possess expert liability claims technical knowledge, in depth knowledge of applicable Illinois law, the Tort Immunity Act and Section 1983 law, superior customer service, analytical, negotiation, decision making and problem-solving skills. Public entity, governmental risk pool, or municipal liability claims experience is preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years experience in liability claims handling and/or litigation, at least 3 years of supervisory experience and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Competitive benefits include a pension plan through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, health and life insurance, a generous time off schedule, and a hiring salary range of $115,000-$140,000, depending on qualifications.
