The student application period is open annually from September through November with a 12-week placement during the summer of the following year from May through August.
MPA Internship
We are looking for a self-starter that is personable and would enjoy working in the field with our members, local municipal leaders. IRMA is a not-for-profit municipal risk pool that offers an insurance and risk management services to over 70 public entities in Northeastern Illinois. This unique opportunity allows students to work with a variety of our members on engaging projects that match their interests and will help further their pursuit of a career in local government.
The ideal candidate possesses the ability to work under a high level of discretion, managing multiple deadlines with minimal supervision. All candidates must be in good academic standing and currently enrolled in MPA, or equivalent, program.
The placement period is one academic year, with an option to extend. Placement begins in August 2022 through May 2023. Application period is open through May 16, 2022. The student application period is open annually from March through May with placement during the academic year from August through May, with a possibility to extend.

Applications are reviewed by IRMA's Management Staff. Based on qualifications and submitted materials, we will determine which students will be scheduled for interviews and final internship selection. Submission of an application is not a guarantee of participation in the program.

We encourage all members to apply for internship placement of either the Summer Safety & Risk Management or MPA Interns. The success of our internship programs are due to the direct partnership with our members and the exposure to the real-world projects occurring in the public sector.
To complete the application:

Specify the placement opportunity proposed for the intern to work on that meet the project criteria.

Indicate the expected deliverables to be completed by the end of the internship placement.

Indicate target placement date and placement duration.

Summarize the overall intention for requesting intern assistance and provide background on requested projects.
